Small business marketing ideas that bring customers back
Updated 22 October 2026
The small business marketing ideas that pay off first are the cheap ones: a complete Google listing, reviews you ask for, social posts done steadily, and above all a way to bring back the customers you already have. They already know you, so they are the easiest people to win again. Below, the ideas that work for any business, then the ones for restaurants, hotels and shops, each with what it costs.

Telaio: an app of your own, from €59 a month
Your own app, with your name, logo and colours, on your customers’ phones. They install it by scanning a QR code: ten seconds, no App Store, no account.
- A model for every trade: restaurant, bar, hotel, B&B and mountain hut, winery, shop and seller
- Offers and a digital loyalty card that count by themselves
- Notifications, scheduled if you like, to people who said yes
- Eight languages, and it works offline
- Live the same day, and you update it from your phone

Start with your free Google listing
When someone looks for a place like yours nearby, the first thing they see is your Google Business Profile: name, photos, opening hours, phone number, reviews. It is free. Use real photos, keep the hours right (holidays included), add a link to your menu, rooms or products, and reply to every review, the bad ones too: people read your replies.
Cost: €0.
Ask every customer for a review, the same way
Reviews come when you ask, at the right moment, in a single tap: Google lets you share a link or a QR code that opens your review form. Ask everyone the same way, not only the customers you know were happy, and never in exchange for anything: Google bans reviews bought with discounts, freebies or services, and its guidelines don’t allow asking only the happy ones. More in How to get more Google reviews.
Cost: €0.
Post steadily, not loudly
You don’t need an agency, you need a rhythm: two or three posts a week, every week, beat ten in one day and then silence. Post what is new and real: today’s special, this week’s offer, Friday’s event, the people behind the counter.
Cost: €0, plus your time.
With Telaio: at the foot of every offer and event there’s a «Share» button: the post builds itself, photo included, and you choose where it goes.
Give people a reason to come back
A first visit is only half the job. Give them something for next time, not for today: a coffee, a dessert, a small gift. Add a loyalty card they can’t lose, and a way to tell them when there’s something worth coming back for. This is the idea that pays off longest, because it works on customers you have already won once.
Cost: with Telaio, €59 a month, or €41 a month on the 12-month plan; for hotels and B&Bs, €69 or €48.
With Telaio: two offers go out by themselves: «Welcome» the first time someone opens your app, and «Come back and see us» after the first visit.
Restaurant marketing ideas
Give your quiet night a name (Thursday fish night, Monday pizza) and make it a habit, not a one-off promotion. Offer a gift rather than a discount: a glass of the house wine, a dessert. Put a QR code on the table or the bill tray, so people take you home on their phone, and tell them the day before, with a short notification. The details are in How to fill a restaurant on quiet nights and How to get repeat customers at your restaurant.
Hotel marketing ideas
Your website sells the stay; your marketing works hardest once the guest has arrived. Put everything they would ask at the front desk on their phone, ask for the review on the day they leave, and keep a direct line open after check-out. If you are wondering how to get repeat guests, that line is the answer: a guest who leaves with your app on their phone knows how to find you again, without a booking site in between. With Telaio, five notifications go out by themselves on the right day for each guest, based on the dates they gave. More in What to put in a hotel compendium.
Retail marketing ideas
A shop’s best customers come back every week, and they want to know what is new before they come in: fresh stock, this week’s offers, the day you deliver to their area. Hand out a card with your QR code at the till or with every order, keep your products and prices up to date on their phone, and send a message when something is worth knowing. The answer to how to get repeat customers, retail or otherwise, is the same: a reason to come back, and a way to hear about it. More in Switching from a paper stamp card to a digital one.
